Cecilia Valdés Collection 1995
This collection channels colonial elegance through white textured cottons, corseted silhouettes, and hand-stitched detail, using restraint and structure to reflect lives shaped by inherited power. Inspired by Cecilia Valdés, the iconic Cuban novel by Cirilo Villaverde first published in 1839 and later expanded in 1882, the work draws from a story set in nineteenth-century colonial Havana. The novel follows Cecilia, a beautiful mixed-race woman whose life becomes entangled in rigid racial and social hierarchies, and whose tragic romance with a white aristocrat unaware of their shared bloodline exposes the cruelty beneath colonial privilege.
