Celia Cruz wasn’t just a client. She was a lifelong icon to me. She arrived at my studio in a simple shirt with tiny holes, no glam squad, just her and her husband. We spent the afternoon talking and trying on pieces. Later, she invited me to her concert at Lincoln Center. After the show, we went to her apartment for the release of her Celia Cruz doll. Tito Puente was there, along with María Conchita Alonso and the Fania All-Stars. That night, she pulled me into a private room for a jam session that went until dawn. It was an unforgettable, magical experience. Moments like that are what this work has brought me, and I have cherished every one of them.”
